Her recent films (Kahaani 2, Te3n) did not do well at the box office, but there is always an intrigue factor surrounding a Vidya Balan film. The actress has reunited with Vishesh Films for her next, Begum Jaan, which is set to be released on 14 April.  Balan had first worked with Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt in Hamari Adhuri Kahani (2015).

The filmmakers have unveiled the title logo and tagline of the film which reads ‘When freedom fought Independence’. The tagline is enough to suggest that this is a period film.

Begun Jaam is said to be a historical drama directed by Srijit Mukherji, who makes his début in Hindi cinema. The film is an adaptation of the 2015 Bengali film Rajkahini. Vidya plays the lead role of a brothel's madam during the Partition of India in 1947.

Apart from Vidya, the film stars Naseeruddin Shah, Chunky Pandey and Gauhar Khan. Vidya was last seen in Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani 2 (2016).
