Superstar Aamir Khan expressed deep sorrow at the death of yesteryear film star Shashi Kapoor, who passed away in Mumbai today.

The Dangal (2016) actor has always been known to respect seniors in the film industry. He also has a special affinity to the Kapoor clan. And it is no secret that he was a great fan of the late Shammi Kapoor, a favourite of his filmmaker grandfather Nasir Husain.

Paying glowing tribute to Shammi's younger brother Shashi Kapoor, Khan said, "Shashi uncle was not only a great star and passionate filmmaker, but also a wonderful human being. His work has always given Indian audiences great joy. His contribution to Indian theatre was huge, Prithvi theatre is the favourite venue of performers and audiences alike. His passing is a sad day for all of us. My condolences to Sanjana, Kunal Kapoor, Karan and everyone in the family. May his soul rest in peace. Love and respect,” Khan posted on Twitter.

Sanjay Dutt also hailed Kapoor for his contribution to cinema.

Former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen hailed Kapoor as a kind and generous man.

Ajay Devgn, a man of few words, kept his condolences short.

Filmmaker Subhash Ghai, who had directed Kapoor in two films, Gautam Govinda (1979) and Krodhi (1981), also condoled his death. "I learnt a lot from him like work ethic, discipline, time-planning, compassion, humility with the lowest-ranked person and, above all, his love and passion for good cinema and theatre development in India," Ghai said. "A handsome gentleman with a beautiful mind and heart. An inspiring institute himself. RIP."

Film star Akshay Kumar also offered his tribute, echoing the famous 'Mere paas maa hai' line from Deewaar (1975).

Meanwhile, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar too paid tribute to Kapoor, an actor whom he admired while growing up.
