There is something about Punjabi weddings and folk songs that make them an irresistible combination. With 'Kaala Doreya', the team of Kaalakaandi seem to have hit the perfect notes. The song, composed by Sameer Uddin, sung by Neha Bhasin, captures the slow, rhythm to which the craziness unfolds in Akshat Verma's film.
The song sets the tone for the beginning of the pivotal wedding of Akshay Oberoi and Sobhita Dhulipala's characters. While the scenario captures the funky mess that all the characters in the film are in, particularly that of Saif Ali Khan's Rileen. It also depicts a sweet romance blossoming between Rakhi (Isha Talwar) and Rileen. This, however, is underlined by the crazy Punjabi wedding celebration with guns, booze and a lot of fun.
The magic, though, lies in the tempo of the song. Too often composers raise the pace and tempo of a Punjabi folk number, destroying the flirtatious, playful essence of the lyrics it contains. 'Kaala Doreya' maintains the balance perfectly, keeping its original essence intact. The little deviation lies in the introduction of a slow, funky beat that keeps the song peppy, and the rap by Raxstar. The rap is cool and sharp, standing out from the rest of the music.
Neha Bhasin's voice adds to the entire flirtatious nature of the song, and makes it worth listening to. The singer delivers an impeccable upgrade on the hit Punjabi number, making this one an earworm.
Kaalakaandi is directed by Akshat Verma, and stars Saif Ali Khan, Sobhita Dhulipala, Isha Talwar, Kunal Roy Kapur and Vijay Raaz. The film is set to be released on 12 January 2018.
