Simran trailer: Meet adorable shoplifter, gambler Kangana Ranaut

Even with her shoplifting and gambling vices, Simran comes across as a liberating character.

Very few actors are presented with roles that fall in between black and white. Kangana Ranaut seems to have scored one in Hansal Mehta's Simran, where she plays a chronic shoplifter and gambler, and an adorable one at that.

Ranaut is known for her feisty, devil-may-care attitude, and these are the traits that you find in Simran too. It would be fair to say that Ranaut, perhaps, is born for this role.

What strikes about the trailer is the tale of a divorced woman wanting to break free. Yes, even with her shoplifting and gambling vices, Simran comes across as a liberating character.  She maybe have been scarred by her past but now wants to follow her heart, 'fly like like a butterfly' as we hear in the opening section of the trailer.

Shoplifting, gambling is perhaps her way of getting a sense of upliftment. But when you take down that path, trouble is bound to follow. We see an angry Simran lose her bearings, just stopping short of hitting her father.

The trailer reminds you of the story of Indian American Sandeep Kaur, who worked as a nurse but then resorted to gambling and robbing banks. Sandeep Kaur was convicted of robbing four banks in America and was sentenced to 66 months in prison in April 2015.

The trailer hooks you with its intriguing story. Rarely have we seen a lead actress play a gambler and a robber. Simran promises to be be a fun film, with enough emotional drama. It gives away its prime plot and yet leaves one craving to know more.

Simran promises to be one helluva ride.

The film is set to be released on 15 September, competing with Farhan Akhtar’s Lucknow Central.
