Jab Harry Met Sejal fares below expectations with Rs44 crore nett in its opening weekend

Earning approximately Rs46 crore in the overseas market, the Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma film has bagged Rs100 crore worldwide so far.

Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma’s latest release Jab Harry Met Sejal hasn’t enjoyed a great opening weekend. The film, directed by Imtiaz Ali, could only earn Rs44 crore nett in its opening weekend, as reported by BoxOfficeIndia.com. Khan's last release Raees (2017) had fared better, bagging Rs59.48 crore nett in its opening weekend.

Jab Harry Met Sejal showed marginal growth on Sunday, bagging Rs14.75 crore nett as opposed to the Rs14.25 crore nett it earned on the preceding day. The film opened to a decent Rs15 crore nett on Friday, but it didn’t show much growth over the holiday weekend.

Made at an approximate budget of Rs80 crore, Jab Harry Met Sejal has  released across 2,100 screens in India, and over 1,100 screens overseas.  The problem seems to be that the film was sold to NH Studios for approximately Rs130 crore. Thus, the distributors face a tough task of making substantial gains from the film.

In the overseas market, the film earned around $6.75-7 million (approximately Rs46 crore at the current exchange rate). Jab Harry Met Sejal has bagged Rs100 crore worldwide so far.

The worrying factor for the film is that it has got largely negative reviews and come Friday (11 August) Akshay Kumar’s much hyped social drama Toilet: Ek Prem Katha will hit the theatres. As opposed to Khan, Akshay is going through a purple patch with his last four releases, grossing over Rs100 crore in the domestic market.
