The Supreme Court of India finally abolished the practice of 'divorce through the utterance of 'talaaq' thrice among Muslims in the country. The judgment has been hailed as one that protects the rights of women. Even the film industry stepped up to praise the judgment on Twitter.
Passing a judgment abolishing the practice, the five-member bench of the Supreme Court passed the judgment saying 'In view of the different opinions recorded by a majority of 3:2, the practice of 'talaq-e-biddat' – triple talaq is set aside.'
Actress Shabana Azmi called it a 'victory for brave Muslim women'. Speaking to IANS news agency, the actress and social activist tweeted: 'I welcome the Supreme Court judgement on instant Triple Talaq. Its a victory 4 brave Muslim women who hve waged battle against it for years.'
With support pouring in from the film industry, it looks like the Supreme Court of India might have found new fans in this group.
