Judwaa 2 trailer: Varun Dhawan is the only reason this duplicate trailer works

David Dhawan's Judwaa 2 trailer launched today, with the film set for a 29 September release.

Varun Dhawan's reprisal of a role played by a young Salman Khan back in 1997 seems like a good decision. The actor has the comic prowess, and the physicality to give a new dimension to the twins — Prem and Raja — played by Salman Khan in the 1997 film. The trailer for the film, released today, shows signs that the director is keeping to the twinning in his trailer as well.

The trailer's first shots focus on the similar body reflexes which are the centre of the plot in the earlier film. As the shy, non-violent Prem struggles with psychiatry sessions to escape his bullying, the entry of the rowdy, loud, Raja adds to the entire conundrum. Jacqueline Fernandez and Taapsee Pannu bring about the female romantic angles in the film.

As for the new element, there seems to be little other than the London setting in the film. The jokes (from the shy Prem kissing a girl to hitting a policeman), the style (Dhawan doing the pelvic flex a la Khan in the 1990s), and the songs ('Yes', 'Tan Tana Tan' and 'Oonchi Hai Building' make an appearance) remain the same as the first film. Although some of them, where Raja uses the 'capital of Afghanistan' as a way of finalising consent for marriage sound a little dated, and cliched.

But Varun Dhawan in in his element. From mouthing dialogues that poke fun at 'soundarya sabuns' to walking with attitude, the actor does show promise in this over the top avatar. The actor looks good as Prem, but his Raja might make Khan's version look a little childish. The actor's personality and natural flair makes it easy to see why many rate him as an upgraded version of Khan.

While Khan will be making a special appearance in the film, alongwith Karisma Kapoor, there is no sign of it in the trailer yet.

Judwaa 2 is set to be released on 29 September.
