After experiencing the high on Independence Day, when it bagged Rs19.5 crore nett, the earnings of Akshay Kumar starrer Toilet: EK Prem Katha was expected to drop on the following working day, (16 August). However, the drop was perhaps a little more than expected. The film’s sixth day collection amounted to Rs6.50 crore nett, as reported by BoxOfficeIndia.com.
The film has so far earned Rs88 crore nett in the domestic market. The drop is huge but Toillet: Ek Prem Katha has still fared better than the other big releases this year.
Shah Rukh Khan’s much hyped Jab Harry Met Sejal crashed at the box office after the opening weekend where it made Rs43.28 crore nett. The first week collection only totalled to about Rs57.71 crore nett. The Monday to Thursday (7-10 August) collection was barely Rs14 crore nett.
Jab Harry Met Sejal had released on 4 August. The film crashed out after the first week itself as Toilet: Ek Prem Katha took over on 11 August.
Ranbir Kapoor’s Jagga Jasoos, that released on 14 July, could barely get Rs53 crore nett in its India business. The film had released across 1,750 screens in India and was made at a whopping overall budget of Rs130 crore. According to Taran Adarsh, the film could manage to earn only Rs3.05 crore nett on the Wednesday after release.
Earlier, Salman Khan’s big ticket Eid (23 June) release Tubelight fell flat at the box office earning Rs114.57 crore nett in its India business. The film could only collect Rs5.75 crore nett on its first Wednesday. That was a 50 % drop from its preceding day collection where it bagged Rs11.75 crore nett. Tubelight had released across 4,400 screens in India and its budget was touted to be in the region of Rs130 crore.
What works for Akshay Kumar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha is that it was sold to distributors Viacom18 Motion Pictures for Rs53 crore, that didn’t include Akshay Kumar’s fees. Its overall budget is said to be around Rs70 crore. Earlier, trade analyst Vinod Merani had told Cinestaan.com that Toilet needed to do a business of Rs120-125 crore for the distributors to make profits. The film has released across 3000 in India.
