Shubh Mangal Saavdhan trailer: Ayushmann Khurrana addresses another sex-related taboo

It takes guts to kill off your own legend. Ayushmann Khurrana had emerged as the sperm-donating alpha male Vicky Donor (2012) in his debut film, but the actor is now playing a character who suffers from erectile dysfunction in Shubh Mangal Saavdhan. The makers released a highly entertaining trailer today.

Directed by RS Prasanna, the romantic comedy is a remake of Prasanna’s Tamil film Kalyana Samayal Saadham (2013). The teaser, released last week, had described Mudit (Khurrana) and Sugandha (Bhumi Pednekar) as uncool. Well, they do come across as that, but the subject of the film is bound to shock audiences.

Without making below-the-belt references, director Prasanna explains the issue discussed in the film using a metaphor — the bending and breaking of a biscuit dipped in tea. Though hailing from the South, Prasanna has set the film in Delhi. He cleverly uses innuendo to bring out the problem at hand.

Though Mudit suffers from erectile dysfunction, Sugandha is more than willing to marry him. They love each other. The trouble, though, is the parents. Sugandha’s father does not want her to get married to an man with sexual problems. But such men and their families would do whatever it takes to cure the dysfunction. The trailer hints at a similar situation in the film and guarantees a few laugh-out-loud moments. Clearly, notwithstanding the prowess of the protagonist, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan seems to be a potent film.

This is Khurrana and Pednekar's second film together, after Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015). The duo look like a reel pair made for each other. The film is set to be released on 1 September.
