Akshay Kumar has never been lucky with awards. That story changed today as he bagged the National Award for Best Actor for his performance in Rustom.
The actor is obviously over the moon. This is exactly what it feels after watching his reaction in the video that he shared on social media. Akshay has thanked the jury and his fans. “Thank you appears to be a very small word right now. But I don’t know how else to express what I feel right now. I am truly humbled by this honour,” he said.
He said that Rustom was a special role for him. “To wear your country’s navy’s uniform is a special feeling in itself, even if it is just for a role. Now this National Award has made it special forever.”
Akshay dedicated the award to his wife Twinkle Khanna. “She always used to joke that it’s good that I have stopped going to awards functions because I never win. Well, better late than never.” Twinkle is one of the producers on Padman.
Co-incidentally, Akshay is currently shooting for R Balki’s Padman with Sonam Kapoor, who also got a special mention and her film Neerja has won the National Award for Best Hindi Film. “It is amazing that she is also here with me. So, it’s a double celebration for us.”
Despite winning a few awards for Neerja, Kapoor was probably not expecting this honour. On the other hand, awards have always eluded Akshay. The 'shocked' expression in that case seems quite legit.
In an episode of Koffee With Karan this season, Akshay had revealed that Twinkle once told him, “Both my parents (Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia) have won National Awards. What have you won?” In the same episode, Twinkle stated Akshay’s situation saying, “Other actors have awards cabinets. My husband has a cabinet filled with money.”
Later on, Twinkle also taunted Akshay for winning the Star Screen Award once for his performance in Singh Is Kinng (2008) but giving it away to Aamir Khan as he felt Khan deserved it more for Ghajini (2008).
During an interaction with Cinestaan.com for his film Jolly LLB 2, the Khiladi, when asked about his no luck with awards, had said, “Nothing happens if you don’t win an award.”
In the video, Akshay has wrongly mentioned that Kapoor has won the National Award.
