MOM teaser: Sridevi matches Nawazuddin's chameleonic personality with riveting intensity

The teaser for MOM promises an intriguing tale of suspense and courage, with Sridevi leading the way.

Shriram Iyengar

After her heartwarming performance in Gauri Shinde's English Vinglish (2012), Sridevi is back. The actress shared a teaser of her upcoming MOM on her Twitter handle, and it is gripping in its intensity.

The actress plays a mother fighting to save her daughter from a larger and darker conspiracy. While the teaser offers an intriguing glimpse into the nature and suspense of the drama, it also brings back an actress at the prime of her talent.

Sridevi looms large on the teaser with the realistic intensity that captures your attention. From the teaser, it looks like Sridevi's character is in search of her daughter, who goes missing on a trip. The teaser does bear some resemblance to the plotlines of Kahaani 2 (2016) and soon-to-be-released Maatr — The Mother.

It also has moments of brilliance from Akshaye Khanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The latter is back to his chameleonic ways, transforming his personality such that he is almost unrecognisable. The teaser warrants a second look only to find Siddiqui vanishing into the crowd. Khanna looks quite intense in his role and manages to make an impact in his short appearance.

Regardless of the others, the film looks to belong to Sridevi. As the mother in search of her daughter, the actress brings out all the necessary intensity. With Raveena Tandon also playing a vindictive mother in Maatr, it looks like 'maa' is becoming the centre of film scripts again.

MOM is directed by Ravi Udayawar, and produced by MAD films and Third Eye Pictures. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on 14 July.
