The singer has been embroiled in quite a few battles because of his tweet against loudspeakers in religious places.
Shriram Iyengar
Sonu Nigam has stirred up a hornet's nest, and the industry is walking on egg shells over it. The singer ruffled the troll brigade early on Tuesday morning yesterday (18 April) after he questioned the use of loudspeakers to announce the morning 'azaan' in mosques.
God bless everyone. I'm not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India
— Sonu Nigam (@sonunigam) April 16, 2017
To be fair to Nigam, he also raised the issue of temples and gurudwaras using similar tools to disturb the peace and quiet of common residents around. However, in the flood of tweets that followed, the issue was turned into something far more communal.
The tweet also earned some flak from his own music community. Wajid Khan, of the composer duo, Sajid-Wajid, said that he was 'hurt' that Nigam had tweeted about not being a Muslim, and compared the loudspeaker use to gundagiri (rowdyism).
I'm hurt as my dearest brother @sonunigam tweeted such words about #Azaan n not being a Muslim #Gundagiri knowing U never expected ths not U
— Wajid Khan (@wajidkhan7) April 17, 2017
Wajid compared the statement to the obvious, Salman Khan, asking to respect every religion.
#Hatsoff to bhai who has just said it all @BeingSalmanKhan Respect everyone's Religious faith...pls check this...! https://t.co/x340tgJYhV
— Wajid Khan (@wajidkhan7) April 17, 2017
Defending himself, Nigam said that he simply mentioned it as an example of one of the many ways religious institutions impede peace.
Dear @wajidkhan7. If for once u stop being a Muslim & simply be a Citizen of India, u will see what everyone is truly talking about. Love https://t.co/AmX7qXHW13
— Sonu Nigam (@sonunigam) April 18, 2017
Wajid though, was not very convinced.
@sonunigam v know each other for more than 25 years n today the whole day I kept gettng calls about Ur tweets but I was speechless I agree
— Wajid Khan (@wajidkhan7) April 17, 2017
It was about Loudspeaker, and only loudspeaker. Too bad that they r on Mosques, Temples & Gurudwaras, thus the reference. Let's be human 1st https://t.co/JDwUHvqDnW

@sonunigam that everyone has thr own point of view but that can be said without hurting others sentiments.hope u'll understand whr comng frm
— Wajid Khan (@wajidkhan7) April 17, 2017
Despite the singer's insistence that he was only raising a social issue, composer Wajid continued to maintain that 'irrespective of caste and creed, one must support, and love each other' to ensure progress.
Strength lies whn all of us irrespective of caste n creed stand, support and luv each othr ths is the only way we shall progress as a nation.
— Wajid Khan (@wajidkhan7) April 18, 2017
However, not everyone was against Nigam. Singer Sona Mohapatra stepped up in defense of her fellow singer tweeting:
Just saw this finally & I do agree & believe that our voice's do not need amplification or a PA system to reach out to our God's for sure.ðð½ https://t.co/YlnhpxLE9O
— #SonaLIVE (@sonamohapatra) April 18, 2017
Richa Chadha and Pooja Bhatt also stepped up to endorse the singer's opinion.
I wake each morning to the sound of church bells & the Azaan in a quiet by-lane of Bandra.I light an aggarbatti & salute the spirit of India
— Pooja Bhatt (@PoojaB1972) April 18, 2017
People will misunderstand your tweet n give it a communal tinge, only those who know you will know you mean not to stoke a fire. âð¼ï¸ https://t.co/P8NvIQ4m4s

Singer Shaan too, speaking with a daily tabloid revealed, "I support what he has tweeted, not because he’s a friend but because he’s right. The law of the land is equal (for) all. Be it azaan or Hanuman Chalisa chant or any other religious practice, one must see that noise pollution must be curtailed."
Meanwhile, the Mumbai police has beefed up security outside Nigam's house after the singer received a number of threats for his tweets.
The West Bengal Minority United Council even went out to declare a 'fatwa' against the singer. Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi, vice-president of the council said, "If anyone can shave his hair, put a garland of old torn shoes around his neck and tour him around the country I personally announce an award of Rs10 lakh for that person."
However, the singer seems to have pulled a fast one as he announced that he is shaving his head by Hakim Alim. He even went ahead suggesting the maulvi should pay Alim the Rs10 lakh announced.
Today at 2pm Aalim will come to my place, and shave my head. Keep your 10 lakhs ready Maulavi. https://t.co/5jyCmkt3pm
— Sonu Nigam (@sonunigam) April 19, 2017
And Press is welcome to participate at 2pm.

In addition, an FIR has been filed against the singer in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. It looks like it will be a long week ahead for Nigam.
