Vidya Balan-led Begum Jaan, directed by Srijit Mukherji, opened to a meagre Rs3.5 crore on its first day. And while the numbers generally go up on Saturday and Sunday, Begum Jaan saw a downward trend on day two. The film earned Rs3.25 crore on Saturday and Rs3.75 on Sunday, taking its opening weekend total to Rs10.5 crore, which is quite low.
Released in around 1,100 screens, the budget of the film is less (approximately Rs15 crore), but going by its performance on Sunday, Begum Jaan may still find it difficult to recover its costs.
"The film had Fast & Furious 8 for competition, but that's not the reason for the poor collections, it's the content," says BoxOfficeIndia.com.
Begum Jaan, starring Gauhar Khan, Pallavi Sharda, Vivek Mushran, Chunky Pandey along with Vidya, opened to mixed to negative reviews. And the negative word of mouth is said to be the main reason for the film's low collections.
Next Friday, the film will face competition from Sonakshi Sinha's Noor and Raveena Tandon's Matra, which hit the theatres on 21 April.
