The Vidya Balan-starrer earned low numbers despite it being national holiday yesterday.

Srijit Mukherjee’s Begum Jaan opened poorly on its opening day yesterday (14 April). The Vidya Balan-starrer, which is the official Hindi remake of the Bengali film Rajkahini (2015) by the same director, managed to earn only Rs3.50 crore, as per figures shared by BoxOfficeIndia.com.

The low numbers have come as a surprise because yesterday was a national holiday for Good Friday. Earlier this year, OK Jaanu, Phillauri and Naam Shabana earned more on their respective first days although they were not national holidays.

Begum Jaan is reportedly made at a budget of Rs19 crore. With such low numbers of the first day, coupled by the lukewarm buzz and word-of-mouth, it seems the film will struggle to recover its cost of production. It needs a good growth today (Saturday) and Sunday.

On the other hand, Hollywood action thriller Fast & Furious 8: The Fate Of The Furious earned an impressive Rs11 crore yesterday in India. The film had released on Thursday, when it had earned an impressive Rs9.25 crore. It did well on paid previews too on Wednesday by raking in Rs5.50 crore. It is believed that the business of Begum Jaan has been affected due to Fast & Furious 8: The Fate Of The Furious.
