There were big hopes from Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya as his last release was the highly appreciated Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013). But the film got largely negative reviews and failed at the box office.
The film, a launch vehicle for Anil Kapoor's son Harshvardhan Kapoor and the late Usha Kiran's granddaughter Saiyami Kher, is a retelling of the old legend of Mirza Sahiban. It earned a dismal Rs1.75 crore on the opening day. And while numbers normally increase on the weekend, in this case, they slipped to Rs1.50 crore on Saturday. The film earned Rs1.75 crore on Sunday, taking its weekend collection to a paltry Rs5 crore.
With Mirzya being among the top 10 expensive films of 2016, these collection figures mean the film has been a disaster at the box office. In fact, in percentage terms, it is the year's biggest loser, surpassing Fitoor and Mohenjo Daro.
Tutak Tutak Tutiya and MSG The Warrior: The Lionheart, which released alongside Mirzya, also bit the dust as they only managed to get Rs1.60 crore and Rs3.15 crore, respectively, on the first weekend.
