Even as a fresh controversy rages around Karan Johar's film, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil continues to make progress at the box office. The film saw a steady collection on its second Friday, earning in the range of Rs4-4.25 crore. This takes its total box-office collection to Rs82 crore, ensuring that at least its production cost will be recovered.
ADHM's Diwali rival, Shivaay, continued to be in close pursuit with a return of Rs3-3.25 crore on Friday. However, Ajay Devgn's film has so far managed a total collection of Rs64.80 crore, which might have been good if not for the fact that the film cost a massive Rs105 crore to make, as opposed to Ae Dil Hai Mushkil's budget of Rs85 crore.
The trends for both films appear positive, and the lack of big releases this weekend might see the earnings for both rise on Saturday and Sunday.
Currently, Shivaay ranks in earnings alongside MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, which had a similar return at this point of time. However, the second weekend saw a huge jump in returns leading to Neeraj Pandey's film crossing the Rs100 crore benchmark.
In the current situation, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil looks more likely to cross that milestone. Johar's film has seen a better run in the metros than in regional centres, with Mumbai and Mysore being its best circuits. Shivaay seems to be doing brisk business in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.
Next Friday will witness the release of Rock On 2 starring Farhan Akhtar and Shraddha Kapoor, ending the unchallenged run of these two films.
