Dangal’s new song ‘Gilehriyaan’ is an ode to the joy of small things

Even as Aamir Khan's appearance in Dangal is a tutorial on the challenge in the life of wrestlers, the latest song 'Gilehriyaan' is a sweet, enjoyable ode to the joy in the life of wrestlers. The newest song from the upcoming film Dangal depicts Geeta Phogat’s (Fatima Sana Shaikh) life once she joins the top training academy for sports in India. Aamir Khan, who plays her father Mahavir Singh Phogat, drops off in the beginning of the video, citing his concerns for who will be coaching her once she’s there.

‘Gilehriyaan’ shows how Geeta learns to enjoy little things in life besides wrestling – going to a mall, making friends and watching a movie, things girls her age probably do. The parallels are drawn between the life she and her younger sister, Babita (Sanya Malhotra), live under the strict tutelage of their father Mahavir.

Written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and sung by Jonita Gandhi, ‘Gilehriyaan’ captures the feeling of a young woman coming into her own. The video shows how Geeta changes, allowing small indulgences like eating pani puri to growing out her hair.

Dangal, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, is due to be released on 23 December 2016.
