On Friday 27 May, three films of diverse genres clashed at the box office – Ram Gopal Varma’s Veerappan, Pawan Kripalani’s Phobia and Anu Menon’s Waiting. None of the three turned out to be a threat for the others as they all fared badly at the ticket window in the first weekend, as reported by BoxOfficeIndia.com.
As the title suggests, Veerappan is based on the story of the late infamous dacoit of the same name. The film marked the debut of Sandeep Bharadwaj, who plays the titular role. The film earned a mere Rs4.50 crore in the first three days despite decent amount of hype. And going by the negative reviews, the collections are expected to go downhill in the weekdays.
Phobia, which stars Radhika Apte, and Waiting, starring Naseeruddin Shah and Kalki Koechlin, fared worse. They earned Rs1.50 crore and Rs1.25 crore, respectively, in the first weekend. But as both films have been receiving positive reviews and word-of-mouth, they are expected to earn some compensatory amount in the weekdays.
All three films stand no chance at the box office in the second week since the big-budget multi-starrer Housefull 3 will be hitting theatres on Friday 3 June.
