Amitabh Bachchan is considered one of the legends of Hindi cinema. Despite that, he feels it is necessary for him to get involved in a lot of promotional activities to market his upcoming films.
During a media interaction for his next film Te3n, the veteran was asked whether his name wasn't enough to promote his film. He replied: “I am sorry to inform you, aisa kuchh nahin hain (nothing of this sort is true}. I am honestly telling you. The first-day collection of a Shah Rukh [Khan] or Salman [Khan] film is in the range of Rs40-50 crore. My film earns Rs3-4 crore in a day. So you can’t be spending Rs30-40 crore on marketing a film that will give you Rs3-4 crore on the first day. It’s a waste of money and it’s a burden on the film.”
He continued, “The budget of Te3n is hardly Rs15-18 crore. We won’t be able to collect that much even in a week. These people [Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan] earn Rs40 crore a day. So they can afford this type of marketing.”
Bachchan was also asked whether some actors and filmmakers go overboard in marketing their films. He thoughtfully replied, “There is praise as well as criticism for that. But you need to understand a few things. In our times, films used to run for 25-50 weeks. Today your money is recovered in three days. In order to recover your amount in three days, you need such marketing. Plus, the attention span of this generation is very short.”
