Director Omung Kumar’s Sarbjit received a mixed response from critics and the film also didn’t earn good numbers at the box-office. However, the movie, which stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Randeep Hooda in the lead, might be sent as India’s entry to the next Academy Awards.

According to latest reports, Vashu Bhagnani, the co-producer of the film, has said that he will be sending the film as an independent entry or in race with other films for next year’s Oscars. Whether the film is actually sent will be known later.

Sarbjit is based on the life of the Indian prisoner, Sarbjit Singh who died in a Pakistani jail after he was wrongly convicted for terror activities in the country. The film showcases the struggle of Sarbjit’s sister, played by Aishwarya, in freeing her brother. The film had released on 19 May 2016.
