Punjab based NGO seeks to ban Udta Punjab for showing the state in 'bad light' 

The controversy over Shahid Kapoor starrer Udta Punjab just doesn't seem to end. Just when the Bombay HC passed the film for public screenings, a Punjab NGO has submitted a petition to prevent the same.  

The NGO, Human Rights Awareness Association, is trying to prevent any public exhibition of the film as it shows the agricultural state of Punjab in a bad light. Note that the NGO hasn't watched the film.

This comes after the film's actor Shahid Kapoor, at a press conference held on Tuesday, appealed that people watch the film before drawing their own conclusions. "Stop judging the films and characters after seeing one-minute promo. It's a two and half hour film. If you feel any credibility in people sitting out here, please wait till you view the film before passing judgement or creating a controversy. All the controversies were created without viewing it. Our names and images are at stake. Why would we do that to ourselves?," Shahid told reporters.

Udta Punjab, directed by Abhishek Chaubey, is based on the growing threat of drug abuse in the state. 

The NGO has appealed to the Supreme Court bench of Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and L.Nageshwara Rao to overturn the Bombay HC's decision. According to reports, the NGO's appeal objects to the Bombay HC interfering with the decision of the Central Board of Film Certification to insert 89 cuts in the film. 

The Bombay High Court dismissed the CBFC's decision by suggesting only one cut and added three disclaimers that suggested the film did not promote drugs. 

The film is set to release this Friday after a battle with the CBFC in the Bombay HC. It stars Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor and Diljit Dosanjh.
