Salman Khan's Sultan continued to enjoy strong form at the box office on the second day. The film had the biggest opening-day collection of the year with Rs36.59 crore. Earlier estimates put the first day collection at Rs38 crore, but the eventual collection fell a little short. Day 2 has been just as phenomenal with the film turning up Rs37 crore in earnings. This already makes it the biggest earning film of the year, with its revenue of Rs74 crore already topping the entire life's earning of some films.
The top 5 single days in box-office history are:
1. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – Day 1 – Rs39.32 crore
2. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – Day 3 – Rs38.53 crore
3. PK – Day 3 – Rs38.24 crore
4. Sultan – Day 1 – Rs36.59 crore
5. Sultan – Day 2 – Rs37 crore
Of these, PK is the only non-Salman Khan film to make the list. Sultan now has the opportunity to break Dhoom 3's record of earning over Rs30 crore on three consecutive days. Dhoom 3 made history by earning Rs36 crore, Rs33 crore, and Rs37 crore on consecutive days. With the approaching weekend, which follows the Eid celebrations, Sultan can confidently be expected to breach this record. Analysts have also pointed out that the film will see a rise in earnings as audiences hit the theatres on Saturday and Sunday.
Sultan is also expected to be the quickest to march to the Rs100 crore number. If it does, it would be Salman Khan's tenth film to join the elite club. The star has made a habit of turning up in Rs100 crore blockbusters, a trend which began with Dabanng (2010).
Ali Abbas Zafar's film has placed Khan's stardom in the perfect context of a good underdog story to capture the attention of the audience. The film has already made an impact on Salman Khan fans of all ages, and shows indications of a long run at the box office. Having proved Yash Raj Entertainment's biggest earner of the year, the target for Sultan is to cross the Rs284 crore mark set by Dhoom 3 for lifetime earnings.
Considering Khan leads the film, nothing could be impossible.
