Despite Masti (2004) and Grand Masti (2013) turning out to be winners at the box office, there was hardly any buzz for Great Grand Masti. This, and the fact that the film was leaked online10 days ahead of its rescheduled release (Great Grand Masti was earlier scheduled to be released on 22 July 2016), has obviously had a negative impact on collections. The film earned just Rs2.50 crore on the first day of release on 15 July 2016, as reported by BoxOfficeIndia.com.
The film reprises the main cast of Vivek Oberoi, Riteish Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani. As was the case with the first two films, the female cast is new. This time it’s Urvashi Rautela, Mishti, Pooja Bose and Shraddha Das.
Going by the trend of so-called sex comedies this year, however, audiences appear to have lost the desire to watch this genre by paying big bucks at the theatres. Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 and Mastizaade, which released earlier this year, also fared poorly at the box office, doing a lifetime business in India of a measly Rs5.50 crore and Rs3.39 crore, respectively.
With such a low turnout on the opening day and word of mouth also against it, there isn’t much hope for Great Grand Masti to have any substantial growth on Saturday and Sunday.
