The film follows the unsuccessful sequel runs after Rock On 2, Force 2 and Tum Bin 2.

Director Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani became a runaway success in 2012. The thrilling narrative and Vidya Balan’s stellar performance struck a chord with both —the classes and the masses. However, its sequel, Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh, hasn’t enjoyed a similar run at the box-office.
The film, which also stars Arjun Rampal in a pivotal role, had managed to earn only Rs16.50 crore on its first weekend. After such numbers on the first three days, it was vital for the film to make consistently decent business in the weekdays. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened and the film has amassed only Rs23.75 crore in its first week.
With its cost being around Rs30 crore, the film now hardly stands a chance to even surpass that score. This also means that the film is Balan’s sixth flop in a row after Ghanchakar (2013), Shaadi Ke Side Effects (2014), Bobby Jasoos (2014), Hamari Adhuri Kahani (2015) and Te3n (2016).
The failure of Kahaani 2 is also the fourth failure of sequels in this year, following Rock On 2, Force 2 and Tum Bin 2. This is a serious indication that the audience is not ready to accept a sequel just because the first film turned out to be successful.
With Tom Dick And Harry 2 and Aksar 2 in the pipeline, the situation doesn’t look too hopeful for franchises.
