Kahaani 2 fails the Monday test at the box-office

The film will have a tough time surpassing its cost of production.

Director Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh garnered average box-office figures in its first weekend by earning Rs16.50 crore. With the reported cost of the film being Rs30 crore, it was important for it to not drop much from Monday onwards.

Unfortunately, the second film in the franchise starring Vidya Balan hasn’t passed the Monday test. The film has earned only Rs2.25 crore on the first weekday. This takes its overall total to Rs18.75 crore. Needless to say, it doesn’t stand much chance now to surpass its cost of production and marketing.

Kahaani, the first film in the franchise, met a different fate at the ticket-window. The positive word-of-mouth ensured that the unimpressive opening didn’t affect it. The film went on to earn close to Rs60 crore and that too four-and-a-half years ago.

If we look at all of Balan's films after Kahaani, she hasn’t tasted success since. After this film, she was seen in Ghanchakar (2013), Shaadi Ke Side Effects (2014), Bobby Jasoos (2014), Hamari Adhuri Kahani (2015) and Te3n (2016). The lifetime collections of these films were, Rs28 crore, Rs38 crore, Rs 11.90 crore, Rs32.90 crore and Rs18.80 crore respectively.

Balan will next be seen in Begum Jaan, which will release next year.
