Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh, the sequel to the 2012 hit Kahaani, hit the theatres on Friday, 2 December 2016. Like the first film, this one is also a mystery thriller starring Vidya Balan in the lead. The film didn’t open to good numbers on the first day as it earned Rs4.25 crore.
After such a start, it needed a good jump on the first two days. The jump wasn't high enough to put the film in a safe position. It earned Rs5.50 crore and Rs6.75 crore on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. This makes it overall first weekend collection to Rs16.50 crore, as per figures shared by BoxOfficeIndia.com.
Kahaani 2 is reportedly made at a budget of around Rs30 crore. Hence, it can’t afford high drops on the weekdays, which looks difficult going by the average word-of-mouth.
In the case of Kahaani, it was a different issue. The film hadn’t opened to good numbers. However, it received some terrific word-of-mouth. This helped it remain consistent at the ticket window for a long period.
On the other hand, Gauri Shinde’s Dear Zindagi, which stars Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan, has earned Rs10 crore in its second weekend. This makes its grand total so far to an impressive Rs56.75.
