He is an intense actor on screen and even off it Irrfan Khan seldom reveals his sense of humour in media interactions.

Khan has been paired with Pakistani actress Saba Qamar in his next film, Hind Medium. Given how some extremist political parties have raised objections to employing Pakistani artistes in India, Khan’s film may also run into trouble.

Asked about this possibility at a recent event, Khan chose not to look too far ahead. "You never know, she could get replaced," he said. "It’s too early to comment. There is still time for the film to be released. We don’t know whether the controversy will remain then.”

Reminded about the troubles that Indian filmmakers have faced recently for employing Pakistani artistes, Khan came up with a cheeky reply: “I’ve heard that Saba Qamar got married to an Indian. So, she’s an Indian now.”

For the record, Saba Qamar is still unmarried. Hindi Medium is set to be released on 31 March 2017.
