Filmmaker Ashim Ahluwalia, best known for his internationally-acclaimed film Miss Lovely (2012), is set to explore the underworld with Daddy, a film based on notorious gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli, who was known in his circle as 'Daddy'.
Ahluwalia has roped in Arjun Rampal for the titular role. While Rampal may be an unconventional choice for the role, the teaser proves he's a good one. He is also doubling up as the producer for Daddy. In the minute-long teaser, Daddy is being grilled by the police, with the man denying all allegations.
What strikes you about the teaser is the ripping background score and the compelling voice of Rampal and the unseen cop. There’s almost a sense of fascination towards Daddy that can be gauged from the voiceover of the cop. Rampal’s stern denial is reflective of Gawli's attitude in real life.
The underworld has always been a fascinating subject for filmmakers in the Hindi film industry. This genre has been wonderfully exploited by the likes of Ram Gopal Varma, Anurag Kashyap and even a Vidhu Vinod Chopra who gave us Parinda (1989).
Better known as 'Daddy', Gawli has been accused of kidnapping, torture, and even murder. Daddy is due to be released in 2017.
