After watching the trailer of Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s Pink, it became evident that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) will have some issues with the bold content of the film. And the CBFC did live up to its expectations.
The Pahlaj Nihalani headed board ordered cuts on four ‘bad words’ in the film. These include, ‘phaad de unki,’ ‘bitch,’ ‘r**di’ and ‘saali.’ The CBFC never had any issue with words like ‘sala’ or ‘saali’ all these years before the board was revamped in 2015.
Shoojit Sircar, the producer of the film, agreed to the cuts and the film was passed with a ‘U/A’ certificate, which means minors can watch the film if they are accompanied by an adult.
Despite removing the aforementioned words, Nihalani was all praise for Pink along with Akira, and boasted about the CBFC’s liberal outlook. “Akira and Pink are dark powerful films with hard-hitting content. Normally, they would be granted ‘Adult’ certificates. But we’ve given them ‘U/A’ certificates because we at the CBFC feel pre-adult audiences, kids teenagers and adolescents, need to know what dangers awaits them outside their homes,” he said. He had also showered words of praises for last week’s A Flying Jatt.
Sircar too showed mutual respect to the CBFC despite the cuts. “The CBFC has always been empathetic to my films, right ftom Vicky Donor, which was about sperm donation. They have always understood the relevance of my film’s subject.”
Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari and Andrea Tariang, Pink releases on 16 September.
