Deepika Padukone breaks into Forbes list of world’s highest-paid actresses

Deepika Padukone has joined the top three Hollywood stars Jennifer Lawrence, Melissa McCarthy and Scarlett Johansson on the Forbes list of the world’s highest-paid actresses of 2016. Padukone, at number 10, and Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, at number five, are the only two non-Hollywood actresses on the list.

Jennifer Aniston, Mila Kunis, Julia Roberts and Charlize Theron are also part of the high-standing list. Theron re-negotiated her salary after hacked emails from Sony Pictures Entertainment revealed the huge disparity between the male and female actors in their slate of films, including American Hustle (2013). Both Lawrence and Amy Adams, who starred in the David O. Russell film, feature prominently on this global list.

Padukone was recently named the highest paid Indian female brand ambassador and the highest-paid actress in Hindi cinema. A report earlier this year stated that Padukone now charges Rs15 crore per film. But that’s peanuts compared to what the highest-paid actor, Salman Khan, earns at Rs60 crore per film, three times what Padukone makes. The list notes that while Padukone “earns far less than her Hollywood counterparts for roles, she compensates with over a dozen lucrative endorsements”.

This past July, Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar were named by Forbes at number 86 and 94 respectively on its list of the world’s highest paid celebrities alongside Taylor Swift and the British pop band One Direction. The list of the world’s highest-paid actors will be released tomorrow. Four Indian actors are said to be featured on the list.
