Why did Aamir Khan shelve his own 'Rustom'

Apart from the projects he approves, Aamir Khan's failed projects also make for interesting headlines. Not too long ago, it was rumoured that Nitya Mehra's Baar Baar Dekho was first offered to Khan. However, with Khan unsure about the project, Mehra took it to Karan Johar who cast Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles.

Now, another has been added to Khan's list of missed films with a report claiming that Akshay Kumar's Rustom, which has grossed Rs100 crore, was first considered by Aamir Khan.

As per a report in the DNA newspaper, Neerja director Ram Madhvani had first approached Khan for a film on the life of former naval officer KM Nanavati. Khan had liked Madhvani's direction of Neerja (2016) and felt that he would be the right person to head the film on Nanavati. The Dangal actor had even met Nanavati's widow Sylvia, who had instantly approved Khan for playing her husband's role.

Things looked good to go until Khan learnt that Akshay Kumar was planning a similar film, now known as Rustom. It is then that Khan decided to drop the idea.

There is no doubt that Khan's version of the Nanavati story would have taken a different route. The report quoted a source as saying, "Some of us who were researching for the project are disheartened after seeing Rustom. It has little to do with the case. The tone of our film was going to be totally different. It's one of the most important cases of our times and deserved to be brought to celluloid with some responsibility." 

We wonder how Akshay Kumar will take to that observation.
