Rustom beats Mohenjo Daro on day 1 at the box-office

The result of the biggest box-office clash of 2016 seems to have come out. It looks like Akshay Kumar’s Rustom is all set to fare better than Hrithik Roshan’s Mohenjo Daro. This is evident from the first day collections of both films. While the former earned Rs14 crore in India, the latter has managed only Rs8.75 crore, as per BoxOfficeIndia.com. 

The initial hype and buzz was very much in favour of Rustom since the promos of Ashutosh Gowariker-directed Mohenjo Daro didn’t receive a thumbs up from the audience. And this seems to be proven right as far as the first day collections are concerned. 

But what has made things worse for the Roshan-starrer is its estimated cost of production, which is said to be above Rs100 crore. Therefore, even if the collections shoot up on the second day (today), it will still find it tough to recover the cost, leave alone earning profits. The film has fared even worse than Roshan's last flop, Kites, which managed to amass Rs10 crore on the opening day.

Directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, Rustom is reportedly made at Rs50 crore. Going by the first day earnings, it looks like it will surpass its cost in the first long weekend itself. The film has also earned the fourth highest opening of 2016 after Sultan, Fan and Housefull 3. It has earned a crore less than Kumar's last film (Housefull 3), but it has got 1,200 screens less than that film. It has received around 2,000 screens while Mohenjo Daro has got 2,500.
