The last month saw two films, Sultan and Kabali, set new box-office records with each grossing well over Rs200 crore domestically.
Sanity returned to proceedings with Rohit Dhawan's action flick Dishoom, starring his brother Varun and John Abraham, bagging Rs37 crore in its opening weekend.
The film, which got mixed response from critics, earned a nett of Rs11 crore on its opening day (29 July), and followed it up with nett collections of Rs11.75 crore and Rs14.50 crore on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Thus Dishoom’s opening weekend total stands at Rs37.25 crore, as reported by BoxOfficeIndia.com. Though the numbers aren’t bad, they could have been better if not for the incessant rains on Saturday and Sunday.
Trade analysts pegged the opening weekend figure at Rs37.32 crore.
Industry sources have pegged Dishoom’s approximate budget at Rs60-65 crore, and thus the film will need to do well during the week. There are as many as nine releases on 5 August, but none of them is a big film. Manoj Bajpai’s Budhia Singh – Born To Run is likely to win critical acclaim, but as often happens Bajpai's films rarely set the box office on fire.
Meanwhile, Salman Khan's Sultan got a nett of Rs3 crore in its fourth weekend, taking its total India business so far to Rs297 crore.
