Shoojit Sircar's Pink has right balance of shock and awe: Watch trailer

At the trailer launch of Shoojit Sircar's latest production, Pink, Amitabh Bachchan mentioned that people are losing respect for women across the country. If nothing, the actor seemed to be chanelling that very angst and frustration in the movie. In a trailer that is as riveting as it is shocking, Bachchan stands out with his gravitas and intriguing character. 

The film, directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, seems to be set in the urban chaos of Delhi and tells the story of three independent young women facing dark times. Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari and Andrea Taring play the women who decide to take on bigwigs after being subjected to sexual violence. What follows is the usual charade of society turning on the women instead of protecting them. 

The trailer is edited brilliantly and shows glimpses of the complicated arc that each character goes through. Bachchan is at home playing the frazzled old lawyer who decides to stand up for the women. His character, though, is not without its grey shades, as he is shown in several scenes questioning the women rather than defending them. Piyush Mishra slips into the skin of the cunning prosecution lawyer with ease. However, the scene stealers are the women. Pannu, in particular, looks terrific as the defiant, rebellious woman unwilling to submit to injustice. 

The background score is in synch with the frenzied scenes in the trailer, and adds to the chaotic experience.

Pink carries shades of the infamous Nirbhaya gang-rape that shook the country. At the trailer launch, Shoojit Sircar mentioned that he had followed the case closely, and it influenced the film greatly. The trailer seems to have captured the emotion perfectly. Pink's trailer raises questions that need immediate answers. 

Pink is set to release on 16 September.
